The number that frightens people about an Adobe audit is the worst case one, the figure Adobe leads with before anyone has checked the assumptions. Capping your exposure is the work of pulling that number down to what is genuinely owed, and then making sure the resolution leaves you better protected than you were before.
Start by measuring yourself
The single most effective cap on exposure is a self audit done before, or in parallel with, Adobe. When you know your own deployment, your own active usage, and your own entitlement position, you can meet every claim with evidence. Buyers who walk in blind accept Adobe figures because they have nothing to argue with. Buyers who measured first argue from data.
Challenge the methodology, not just the total
Exposure inflates when usage is counted generously, when inactive installs are treated as deployed seats, and when license terms are read in Adobe favor. Each of those is contestable. We work through how every finding was reached and strip out counts that do not reflect real, licensable use. The total falls as the assumptions are corrected.
Separate genuine gaps from noise
Some findings are real. The goal is not to deny everything, it is to isolate the genuine compliance gap from the noise so you are negotiating over a true number. Once the real gap is clear, it is far smaller and far more defensible than the opening figure, and it becomes something you can resolve on commercial terms.
Resolve forward, not at list
The final cap comes from how you settle. Rather than writing a penalty cheque at list price, fold any real shortfall into a forward looking agreement, at negotiated rates, with terms that prevent the same exposure next time. You convert a backward looking penalty into a managed commitment, and that is where the biggest reduction lives.
