Why the option matters even if you stay
Walking away is rarely the goal. The point is to hold a credible alternative so the negotiation is no longer one sided. When Adobe believes you can and will leave, the price and terms move, because the deal it wants depends on you signing. A buyer with no alternative is a buyer who accepts the vendor's number.
Most successful walk away positions never end in a walk away. They end in a far better deal, secured because the threat reshaped what Adobe was willing to offer.
Build the alternative before you need it
A credible threat is built, not claimed. Map what the business actually depends on, then identify which Adobe products have viable substitutes, where you could reduce scope dramatically, and where you could phase a migration. The more of your spend that has a real alternative, the more of the deal you can move.
Do this work early, while there is still time to act on it. An alternative you raise in the final week is a bluff Adobe can read. One you have genuinely prepared, with timelines and owners, changes the conversation.
Use the leverage without burning the deal
Walking away is a position, not a tantrum. Present the alternative calmly as a business decision, backed by the data and the benchmark, and let Adobe weigh it. The aim is to make staying on better terms the obvious choice for both sides, not to provoke a standoff.
Know your true floor before you start. If a full exit is genuinely impractical this cycle, you can still use partial moves, reducing scope or shortening the term, to apply real pressure without overplaying a hand you cannot back.
