AEP Consumption Cost Exposure

Data team reviewing Adobe Experience Platform consumption

Adobe Experience Platform is priced on consumption, and consumption is hard to predict before you are live. That gap between what you commit and what you actually use is where the cost exposure sits. As an independent buyer side advisor we make that exposure visible before you sign, not after the first overage bill. This article sits under our pillar guide, Adobe Real Time CDP and Experience Platform Cost Guide.

What drives the bill

The platform bill is driven by metrics such as addressable profiles, the volume of data ingested, and the queries and compute your use cases consume. Each use case you add increases consumption, often more than the business case assumed. If you do not model these drivers up front you are committing to a number you cannot yet see.

Where overage hides

Committed consumption comes at a negotiated rate. Anything above the commitment is charged at an overage rate that is usually far higher. The exposure is the difference, and it grows quietly as teams add audiences, attributes and activations. Ask for the overage rate in writing and model the bill at realistic volume, not the committed minimum.

Profile inflation is the common trap

Addressable profile counts inflate fast when anonymous, duplicate and stale profiles are counted. The same record can appear many times across sources. Push for clear rules on how profiles are counted and how they are aged out, because profile inflation is one of the largest sources of unexpected consumption cost.

Cap the exposure before you sign

The time to control consumption cost is before signature, while Adobe still wants the deal. Negotiate the overage rate down, secure the right to reallocate consumption across use cases, and agree a review point so an early estimate that proves wrong can be corrected without penalty.
