AEM vs Alternatives: Cost Lens

Published June 1, 2026

Procurement leaders comparing enterprise software options

When AEM costs climb, the question is not only whether a competitor matches the feature list. It is whether the total cost of staying, switching or running a credible alternative gives you better leverage with Adobe. A buyer side comparison values the switching path as a negotiation asset, not just as a migration project.

Count the full cost of staying

The sticker price of AEM is rarely the real number. Add implementation, the partner work to keep it running, training, and the modules that get bolted on over time. Only when you total the cost of staying can you compare it fairly with anything else. Many buyers find the running cost dwarfs the licence line, which changes where the savings actually live.

Value the alternative as leverage, not just as a product

A credible alternative does two jobs. It may genuinely fit your needs, and it gives you a walk away position that resets the conversation with Adobe. Even when you intend to stay, a real, costed alternative on the table tends to move the discount further than any amount of asking. The point is to be able to leave, which is what makes a better deal possible.

Decide on total cost over the contract term

Compare options over the full term you would commit to, not the first year. Factor in migration cost, the value of features your teams truly use, and the risk of lock in. Sometimes the right answer is to stay on better terms, and sometimes it is to move. Either way, the decision should rest on a complete number rather than a headline price.
